SUMMARY:15th European Conference on Thermoelectrics (ECT2017)
DESCRIPTION:The 15th European Conference on Thermoelectrics (ECT2017) was held September 25-27\, 2017 at the A. Luciani” Padua Congress Centre\, Padova / Italy. A total of 181 (oral and poster) papers were presented at the conference\, which featured over 200 delegates. \nThe first day of the ECT kicked off with a presentation by Claudia Felser (Director and Scientific Member at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids (CPfS)\, Dresden\, Germany) who provided an inspiring discourse on influence of topology on the properties of solids and how these insights might benefit thermoelectric research. A diverse range of thermoelectric topics were broached on this day\, ranging from oxide materials\, through hybrids and composites\, films and nanostructures\, theory and modelling to applications. Additional invited talks were given by Philippe Jund (ICG Montpellier)\, Nick Bennett (Heriot-Watt University\, Edinburgh) and Mauro Brignone (CRF\, Orbassano). The day ended with a welcome reception in the lobby of the conference center. \n \nThe second day featured invited presentations by Muhammet Toprak (KTH\, Stockholm)\, Daniel Zuckermann (Isabellenhütte\, Dillenburg)\, Bartlomije Wiendlocha (AGH University\, Krakow)\, David Berardan (Université Paris-Sud\, Orsay) and Anthony Powell (University of Reading). Other work presented on this day included half Heusler materials\, sulphides and selenides\, and modules and TEGs. The Conference Dinner was held at the Centro Culturale Altinate/San Gaetano in downtown Padua. During the Conference Dinner\, the ECT2017 poster prizes sponsored by the European (ETS)\, the German (DTG) and the Italian (AIT) Thermoelectric Societies were awarded to Monika Raja Thulasimani (Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin)\, Terumasa Tadano (NIMS\, Tsukuba) and Alexey Osipkov (Bauman Moscow State Technical University\, Moscow) and the location of the ECT2019 (Cyprus) was announced. Harald Böttner\, former head of department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques IPM\, was awarded the European Thermoelectric Society’s (ETS) award of honor for his many years of thermoelectric research and his commitment to the ETS (read also the news release of the Fraunhofer IPM). \nOn the final day of the conference\, Mike Reece (Queen Mary University\, London)\, Eric Alleno (ICMPE\, Thiais) and Daniele Marré (Università degli Studi di Genova\, Genoa) gave invited talks. The conference concluded with closing remarks. \nThe talks were accompanied by a series of tutorials on fundamentals and applications of thermoelectricity\, on nanostructures and material characterization. Many of the presented papers will be published in the ECT2017conference proceedings as a special issue of the Materials Today: Proceedings (https://www.journals.elsevier.com/materials-today-proceedings).

SUMMARY:2nd Stuttgart Workshop on Thermoelectrics (SWT2)
DESCRIPTION:On August 8\, 2017\, the 2nd Stuttgart Workshop on Thermoelectrics (SWT2) took place at the Institute for Materials Science of the University of Stuttgart / Germany. The follow-up event of last year’s SWT1 featured 20 oral and poster presentations and attracted more than 40 national and international participants from universities\, research institutes and industry revealing the growing popularity of the conference. Topics span the whole range from basic research of common and novel materials through metrology to application. \nThe workshop itself was framed by two tutorials given by Prof. Dr. Terry M. Tritt from Clemson University (USA)\, a worldwide leading authority in the field of thermoelectrics. The two lectures titled “Overview of Thermoelectric Phenomena and Applications & Selection Criteria for Good Thermoelectric Materials” and “Bulk Thermoelectric Materials Measurements: A Look Behind the Curtain” offered valuable insights in the technology for both non-experts and specialists. \n \nDue to the growing success with the scientific community this conference format will be continued. The next workshop in this series (SWT3) already planned for August 2018 will even broaden the range of topics to semiconductor basics and photovoltaic converters. Stay tuned to the “Phonons meet Photons Workshops”! Please send an e-mail to Dr. Wenjie Xie for further information. \nMore details\, pictures and slides here.

SUMMARY:1st Stuttgart Workshop on Thermoelectrics (SWT1)
DESCRIPTION:Since 2007\, Professor Anke Weidenkaff has been assembling scientists from all over the world every second year to promote cooperation in the development of thermoelectric materials and devices. Four very successful previous workshops and conferences in Switzerland (TEP-CH) were held in 2007\, 2009\, 2011\, and 2013 involving high level lectures of around 40 international and national distinguished invited speakers. In 2016\, she was able to continue this splendid tradition by hosting a thermoelectric workshop in Stuttgart / Germany. \nMore details here.

SUMMARY:ICT2016 Short Report
DESCRIPTION:The 35th International Conference on Thermoelectrics (ICT2016) took place in Wuhan / China from May 29 to June 2\, 2016. Professor Tang and his crew from Wuhan University of Technology arranged a perfect event in a beautiful venue. With 626 attendees\, the conference was a great success \nSix board members of the European Thermoelectric Society attended the ICT2016 (photo). Europe was generally well represented and it was a pleasure that Professors Hubert and Stanislas Scherrer (both Ecole des Mines\, Nancy / France) were jointly presented with the 2016 Outstanding Achievement in Thermoelectrics Award. \nDr. Jan König and Prof. Dr. Yuri Grin were elected to the Board of Directors of the International Thermoelectric Society (ITS). Prof. Dr. Franck Gascoin was entrusted with the organization of the ECT/ICT2018 that will take place in Caen (Normandy) / France July 1-5\, 2018.
